What are cookies and what are they for

Cookies are small text files that the sites visited by the user send directly to his or her terminal (usually to the browser), where they are stored to then be retransmitted to the sites themselves on the next visit by the same user ( first party own cookies). While browsing a website, the user may also receive cookies on his or her terminal from different websites or web servers ( third party cookies); this occurs because there may be elements on the website visited such as, for example, images, maps, sounds, specific links to web pages on other domains which reside on servers other than the one on which the requested page resides. In other words, they are those cookies that are set by a website other than the one that is currently being browsed.

Cookies can have a duration limited to a single browsing session on the browser ( session cookies), and in this case they automatically deactivate when the browser is closed by the user, or they may have a predetermined expiry and, in this case, they will remain stored and active on your hard disk until said expiry date, continuing to gather information during different browsing sessions on the browser ( permanent cookies).

Cookies are used for various functions. Some are required to allow you to browse the website and take advantage of its functions ( technical cookies). Others are used to obtain statistical information in aggregate and non-aggregate form, on the number of users who access the website and on how the website is used ( monitoring or analytics cookies). Lastly, others are used to track a profile of consumers and show you advertisements on the website that may be of interest to you in that they are consistent with your tastes and consumer habits ( profiling cookies).

Technical cookies

Technical cookies are used on the website for the sole purpose of making your browsing on the website possible and allowing you to use its functions. They are simply first party cookies in that they are channelled directly by us on the website.

Some technical cookies are indispensable for offering you an optimum browsing experience or to allow you to authenticate yourself on the website, for example for making a purchase on the website or for entering your reserved area ( browsing cookies). Browsing cookies are normally session cookies and therefore, once the browser is closed, they are automatically deactivated.

For this reason, functionality cookies are often persistent cookies in that they remain stored on your computer even after the browser is closed until the foreseen expiry date or until you decide to delete them.

Analytics cookies are similar to technical cookies where they are used directly by the website manager to gather information in aggregate form on the number of users and on how they visit the website itself;

Profiling cookies

Profiling cookies are intended to create profiles relative to the user and they are used for the purpose of sending advertising messages in line with the preferences demonstrated by the user while browsing the Internet. Due to the particular invasiveness that these devices can have on the area of the user’s privacy, European and Italian legislation requires the user to be adequately informed on the use of the same and to thereby express their valid consent. Art. 122 of the Privacy Code refers to them where it requires that “the storage of information on the equipment of a user or the access to information already stored is allowed solely on the condition that the user has expressed his or her consent after having been informed with the simplified methods pursuant to article 13 of the Privacy Code, subsection 3″.

Session and Persistent Cookies

Session Cookies contain information that is used in the current browser session. These cookies are automatically deleted when the browser is closed. Nothing is stored on your computer beyond the time that the website is used (PHPSESSIONID and language). Persistent Cookies are used to maintain information that is used in the period between one access and another to the website or they are used for technical purposes and to improve website browsing. This data lets websites recognise that you are a return user or visitor and adapt consequently. “Persistent” cookies have a duration that is set by the website and that may range from a few minutes to several years.

First party and third party cookies

Cookies can be installed on the user’s terminal both by the manager of the website the user is visiting (’First Party Cookies’) and by third parties (’Third Party Cookies’). The information gathered through First Party Cookies will be stored by the manager of the website that the user has visited, whereas the information gathered through Third Party Cookies will be stored by the same third parties.
